Newcomer Platner Outpaces in Fundraising, But Collins Holds Financial Edge in Maine Senate Race

In a surprising twist in Maine’s high-stakes Senate race, progressive newcomer Graham Platner has managed to out-fundraise both his Democratic rival Governor Janet Mills and the incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in the first quarter of the campaign season. Platner, a fresh face in the political scene, raised an impressive $4.1 million, signaling a strong grassroots support despite the controversies surrounding him.

However, Senator Collins, who is vying for her sixth term, continues to maintain a significant cash advantage. With over $10 million in her war chest, coupled with the support of the super PAC Pine Tree Results, which itself boasts $11.5 million on hand, Collins seems well-prepared to take on the Democratic challenger post-primary.

While Platner’s fundraising prowess is notable, his total for the first quarter marks a decrease from the previous period’s $4.6 million. Conversely, Governor Mills, who launched her campaign amidst much fanfare, has seen a slight dip in her fundraising efforts, bringing in $2.6 million down from $2.7 million in the last quarter of 2025.

Maine represents a critical battleground for Democrats hoping to reclaim the Senate. Senator Collins stands as the sole Republican senator in a state that favored Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential elections. Despite the national importance of the race, Democrats have not mirrored the fundraising success seen in other key states such as Ohio and North Carolina. This may be due to uncertainty among donors, who appear hesitant to commit fully while the primary battle between Platner and Mills continues to unfold.

Both Democratic candidates have their unique challenges as they head into the June primary. Governor Mills, despite her established political presence and the backing of national Democrats, has not performed as expected in the polls. Platner, on the other hand, has energized supporters with his background as an oysterman and military veteran and his dynamic campaign rallies. However, he has been unable to shake off the fallout from a series of controversial old Reddit posts that surfaced last October.

As the primary approaches, the financial dynamics and voter sentiment in Maine continue to evolve, setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested race that could ultimately influence the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
