Rep. Tom Kean Jr., a figurehead from one of New Jersey’s most notable political families, has been conspicuously absent for the past month, leaving colleagues and constituents puzzled about his whereabouts and condition. Representing New Jersey’s most competitive district, the 7th Congressional District, Kean last participated in congressional votes on March 5. Since then, he's missed nearly 50 roll call votes due to unspecified health issues, according to his team.
Both fellow Republicans and Democrats have expressed concern about Kean's prolonged absence. Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, Kean's GOP colleagues from New Jersey, reported reaching out to him multiple times without any response. "It's been radio silence," said Van Drew, highlighting the unusual nature of the situation.
Even in Washington, Kean's absence is felt and noted with surprise. Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) realized Kean’s absence only when he couldn't find him on the House floor. "I didn't know it was that long," Bacon remarked, reflecting the general unawareness about the extent of Kean's disappearance.
Despite the disquiet, Kean's consultant, Harrison Neely, assured that Kean appreciates the well wishes from supporters and is expected to return to his duties soon. Similarly, Union County GOP Chair Carlos Santos conveyed messages of a hopeful full recovery within the next couple of weeks, based on his communication with Kean.
Kean's district is a political battleground that saw President Donald Trump narrowly win by one point in the 2024 presidential race, while the Democrats showed strong performance in subsequent elections. The district is at the center of several contentious issues, including the opening of an immigration detention facility and the withdrawal of funding for a critical infrastructure project, both of which could impact Kean's re-election prospects.
Bill Palatucci, a Republican National Committee member and attorney to the Kean campaign, expressed confidence that voters will understand and sympathize with Kean’s health-related absence. "It’s so early in the year that it will be long forgotten come the fall," Palatucci said.
As the competitive Democratic primary heats up, Democrats have also taken note of Kean’s absence, with concern for his health being a common theme across party lines. "It's been a long absence," noted Rep. Rob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey. "I hope he's doing all right."
As the mystery around Kean's health and whereabouts continues, both constituents and fellow politicians eagerly await his return, hoping for his recovery and a re-engagement in the pressing issues facing his district.
