House Oversight Committee Sets New Date for Pam Bondi Deposition Amid Contempt Charges Threat

Former Attorney General Pam Bondi is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on May 29, as confirmed by a committee spokesperson. This announcement follows a contentious period where committee Democrats threatened to pursue contempt charges against Bondi for her failure to attend a previously scheduled deposition. This deposition is crucial for the committee’s ongoing investigation into the Department of Justice’s handling of the federal inquiry into Jeffrey Epstein, the late convicted sex offender.

The revelation of the new deposition date surfaced unexpectedly during a press conference held by ranking Republican member Robert Garcia of California, who was preparing to announce a resolution for contempt charges against Bondi. Caught off guard by the news, Garcia commented on the effectiveness of the committee's actions. "We're being effective," Garcia stated, suggesting that the pressure applied by Democrats was instrumental in spurring Republicans into action. "It's interesting how it's only when we take action and when we actually have to force Republicans to do anything, to call subpoenas, to get in front of our committee that they actually ever do anything. So I am so glad that Chairman Comer is scared of this group."

Garcia did not, however, clarify whether the Oversight Democrats would proceed with the contempt resolution despite the new deposition date.

The bipartisan decision earlier this year to compel Bondi’s testimony marked a significant escalation in the committee's investigative efforts. Following her failure to appear, Bondi was ousted from her position as Attorney General, and her former deputy, Todd Blanche, has since taken over as acting attorney general.

The upcoming deposition promises to be a pivotal moment in the Oversight Committee’s investigation, potentially shedding new light on the Epstein case and the Justice Department's actions under Bondi’s tenure. As the date approaches, all eyes will be on Bondi to see how she addresses the committee's pressing concerns and whether her testimony will influence the ongoing legal and political narrative surrounding the Epstein investigation.
