Members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee were left with more questions than answers following a lengthy interview on Thursday with Ted Waitt, tech mogul and former boyfriend of Ghislaine Maxwell, as part of their probe into Jeffrey Epstein’s criminal activities.
The committee sought to understand the extent of Waitt's knowledge concerning Epstein's offenses during the period he was romantically involved with Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for her involvement in Epstein’s sex trafficking operations. Waitt, who made his fortune by founding Gateway computers and now focuses on ocean conservation philanthropy, has not been implicated in any misconduct linked to Epstein.
Rep. James Walkinshaw (D-Va.), expressed skepticism about Waitt's unawareness of the activities, stating before the interview, "Epstein was committing some of his crimes while Waitt and Maxwell were in a romantic relationship, so [we] want to understand what if anything he knew about that."
However, the interview did not prove to be as revelatory as hoped. Midway through, Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.) remarked that the committee had uncovered no new information, suggesting the possibility that some questions might be aimed at connecting former President Bill Clinton to Epstein and Maxwell further.
Waitt's ties to the Clintons were highlighted by his presence at Chelsea Clinton's wedding in 2010 with Maxwell as his guest. This connection was of interest, especially since Maxwell appeared in at least one photograph from the event. Hillary Clinton, in her February deposition to the committee, claimed she did not recall interacting with Maxwell at the wedding.
Despite the Democrats' focus on former President Donald Trump during the interview—which according to an anonymous source was minimal—a GOP committee spokesperson criticized their approach, asserting, "Democrats made today’s interview as they always do all about President [Donald] Trump, and Ted Waitt had no information about him."
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) noted that Waitt struggled to recall many details from the period in question. Meanwhile, Maxwell had previously indicated to then-deputy attorney general Todd Blanche that she met Waitt at a dinner with Bill Clinton in Hong Kong around 2003, shortly after her association with Epstein ended. She also alleged that Waitt was targeted for blackmail due to his connections with her, claiming someone demanded $10 million to exclude him from Epstein’s civil suits in 2009.
The committee plans to follow up on this matter soon, hinting at further actions to uncover more about the connections and knowledge surrounding Epstein’s network. A lawyer for Waitt did not respond to requests for comment on the proceedings.
