The House Ethics Committee has provided an update on its comprehensive investigation into Rep. Cory Mills, addressing allegations including threats to release explicit videos of a former girlfriend. This update comes amidst increased scrutiny over the committee's effectiveness in policing members' conduct.

On Monday, the bipartisan leadership of the panel, chaired by Michael Guest (R-Miss.) and ranking member Mark DeSaulnier (D-Calif.), revealed significant progress in their inquiry. The investigatory subcommittee, established in November, has issued over 20 subpoenas, amassed thousands of documents, and engaged with numerous witnesses. "The subcommittee expects to receive additional relevant documents and testimony in the coming weeks and will take all necessary steps to conduct a full and thorough investigation," the leaders stated.

The Ethics Committee's public communication highlights the pressure it faces to enforce strict behavioral standards following recent resignations of several lawmakers under various accusations, including sexual misconduct. The ongoing scrutiny of Mills involves a February 2025 incident where police were summoned to a Washington home over an alleged assault by Mills. Although the representative has denied any wrongdoing and the supposed victim refuted claims of a physical altercation, the incident remains part of the broader probe.

Further deepening Mills' troubles is an investigation into a restraining order issued by a Florida judge. This order was prompted by another former girlfriend's accusations that Mills threatened to release her nude videos. Mills has also strongly denied these claims.

The Ethics investigative subcommittee is not only focusing on these personal allegations but is also examining charges related to stolen valor and Mills' involvement in federal contracts while in office. Despite the gravity and variety of the allegations, Mills has stated his cooperation with the committee's investigation and expressed confidence in the process.

"The Committee takes these and the other allegations very seriously and will continue to review them in a manner that ensures due process and prioritizes witness confidentiality and safety," reiterated Guest and DeSaulnier.
