Democrats are intensifying their criticism of Representative Jen Kiggans following her agreement with racially insensitive comments made by a radio host regarding Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries. The Virginia Republican affirmed the host's suggestion that Jeffries should keep his “cotton-picking hands” out of Virginia politics by responding, “Ditto, yes, yes to that.”
Christie Stephenson, speaking for Jeffries, condemned Kiggans' reaction as a “stunning failure of judgement.” She criticized Kiggans for lacking commitment to advancing a multi-racial democracy and suggested her attitude reflected a preference for the racially oppressive era of Jim Crow. “Extremists who endorse disgusting, vile and racist language are pathetic,” Stephenson stated emphatically.
The backlash was swift, with Katherine Clark, the No. 2 Democratic leader, branding the language “brazenly racist” and calling for Kiggans’ resignation. Similarly, third-ranking Democrat Pete Aguilar urged Kiggans to “apologize then get the hell out of the House.” The Congressional Black Caucus echoed these sentiments, demanding Kiggans step down.
In response, Kiggans refused to apologize, framing the outcry as a Democratic distraction from their recent judicial setback in Virginia. She did, however, distance herself from the host’s choice of words, stating, “He should not have used that language and I do not - and did not - condone it.”
Despite surviving a potential redistricting threat after the Virginia Supreme Court's decision, Kiggans remains one of the most vulnerable House Republicans. Democrats appear ready to leverage her recent controversy against her in the upcoming elections.
Jeffries has not yet responded directly to Kiggans but has amplified Clark’s call for her resignation. “The voters of Virginia will hold her accountable at the ballot box in November,” promised Stephenson, anticipating electoral repercussions for Kiggans' controversial remarks.
