Nebraska Democrat Cindy Burbank Wins Primary, Plans to Support Independent Candidate Dan Osborn

In a surprising twist in the Nebraska Senate race, Democrat Cindy Burbank emerged victorious over anti-abortion pastor Bill Forbes in the state’s Democratic primary. This victory is set to reshape the electoral landscape, as Burbank is expected to withdraw her candidacy and endorse independent Dan Osborn in his bid against Republican incumbent Senator Pete Ricketts.

Burbank’s campaign received a significant boost from the Nebraska Democratic Party, which strategically chose to support Osborn in the predominantly Republican state. Reflecting on the primary results, Burbank expressed her commitment to what she believes is best for Nebraska, even if it means stepping aside. “Our goal is to ensure that Nebraska’s interests are effectively represented, and sometimes that requires unconventional strategies,” Burbank stated following her win.

The Nebraska Democratic Party has been vocal about their disdain for Forbes, who they argue was not genuinely interested in serving the state’s needs. In March, party chair Jane Kleeb criticized Forbes, saying, "William Forbes is not running to serve Nebraskans. He is running to trick voters.” This sentiment underscored the party’s decision to rally behind an independent candidate as a more viable contender against the Republican incumbent.

Osborn, who narrowly lost to GOP Senator Deb Fischer in 2024 by just seven points, is seen as a strong candidate capable of bridging partisan divides. His campaign has gained traction, particularly among voters disillusioned with the current political climate. Burbank’s upcoming endorsement is likely to bolster his position further, uniting Democratic support behind him.

This primary election has also brought to light the contentious politics of ballot access in Nebraska. Burbank initially faced removal from the ballot by the GOP secretary of state, citing her declared intention not to pursue the seat in November. However, she successfully challenged this decision in court, ensuring her place in the primary—a move that has now proven strategically significant.

As the general election approaches, the focus will shift to Osborn’s campaign and his efforts to consolidate support against Senator Ricketts. With the backing of both Burbank and the state’s Democratic Party, Osborn’s candidacy represents a notable shift towards more collaborative, cross-party efforts to challenge the Republican stronghold in Nebraska.
