Buttigieg Endorses Josh Turek in Iowa's Democratic Senate Primary, Shaping 2026 Political Landscape

Pete Buttigieg, the former 2020 Democratic caucus winner in Iowa, has officially thrown his support behind state Rep. Josh Turek in a fiercely competitive Senate Democratic primary. This endorsement marks Buttigieg's bold step into the arena of high-stakes primaries, signaling potential groundwork for a future presidential run.

The endorsement arrives amid heightened political activity, following a campaign visit by Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who is supporting Turek's primary opponent, state Sen. Zach Wahls. Buttigieg's choice to endorse Turek is seen as a strategic move aimed at consolidating his political influence and building alliances ahead of the 2028 presidential race.

"We made history in Iowa in 2020 because our campaign went everywhere," Buttigieg stated. He praised Turek's campaign approach, which mirrors his own from 2020, focusing on broad connectivity and inclusivity across demographic and political lines. "Josh Turek has taken that same proven approach to his campaign, and that’s why I know he will be successful. I believe Iowa can make history again in 2026 by sending Josh to the U.S. Senate," Buttigieg added.

However, Buttigieg's decision to pick a side in this contest does not come without risks. Earlier this year, he expressed reservations about endorsing candidates in contested primaries, which could potentially alienate some Democratic voters, particularly supporters of Wahls. This move could also be seen as Buttigieg positioning himself against his former rival, Warren, thus affecting their political dynamics.

Adding to the political drama, several of Buttigieg's former campaign aides are now advisors to Turek, hinting at a strategic reunion and a concerted effort to secure a win in Iowa. Notably, Turek's campaign infrastructure includes Chris Meagher, Buttigieg's former national press secretary, and other prominent figures from Buttigieg's 2020 team.

The significance of Iowa in the upcoming electoral cycles remains uncertain, especially after the technical failures during the 2020 caucuses that led to Iowa being demoted in the Democratic nomination process. Nevertheless, Iowa Democrats are lobbying to restore their state's influential position in the early primaries.

Joining Buttigieg in supporting Turek are Democratic Senators Tammy Duckworth, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Maggie Hassan, along with former Iowa Senator Tom Harkin. This collective endorsement could provide a significant boost to Turek's campaign, leveraging their collective political weight and expertise.

Turek expressed his gratitude for the endorsement, emphasizing the alignment in campaign strategy with Buttigieg's successful 2020 approach. "I am deeply honored to have Pete’s support in this race," Turek remarked. "His unique ability to connect with Iowans who feel forgotten and left behind is exactly why he won the caucuses in 2020, and it’s that same approach that will help us win Senator Harkin’s seat back."

As the primary date approaches, all eyes will be on Iowa to see how this endorsement influences the dynamics of the race and whether Buttigieg's political gamble pays dividends in shaping the future Democratic landscape.
