In a startling encounter that has ignited discussions about antisemitism and decorum among political families, Rep. Mike Lawler disclosed he was subjected to an antisemitic outburst by William Paul, the son of Senator Rand Paul. The incident reportedly occurred Tuesday night as Lawler was en route to a dinner engagement accompanied by a journalist.
According to Lawler, William Paul accosted him with inflammatory remarks, ominously stating that he would blame “your people” if Rep. Thomas Massie were to lose his reelection campaign. When Lawler inquired what Paul meant by “your people,” Paul bluntly responded, “Yeah, you Jews.” Lawler, who is not Jewish, corrected him, prompting an apology from Paul before he proceeded into a hateful tirade.
“At one point, he said that he hates Jews and hates gays and doesn't care if they die. And I think that's fucking disgusting,” Lawler recounted. The confrontation ended with Paul making an obscene gesture and stumbling as he exited the scene.
Later, William Paul took to social media platform X to express remorse about his actions, attributing them to excessive alcohol consumption and stating, “I had too much to drink and said some things that don’t represent who I really am. I’m sorry and today I am seeking help for my drinking problem.”
The lack of immediate comment from Sen. Rand Paul's office leaves many questions unanswered as the community and political peers digest the implications of such behavior by a senator’s family member.
Lawler, representing New York’s 17th Congressional District, which includes approximately 90,000 Jewish constituents, emphasized the broader societal issues reflected in this outburst. “I think it speaks to a larger issue, obviously, in society and what we're seeing among young people and what we see online, and this is the level of hatred and vitriol, frankly, that some of my Jewish colleagues experience, that many of my constituents experience,” he explained.
He further vowed to continue advocating for his constituents and upholding the Judeo-Christian values foundational to American society. This incident underscores not only personal misconduct but also the pervasive challenge of antisemitism and prejudice that continues to manifest within various societal sectors, including political spheres.
