Rep. Max Miller, a Republican from Ohio, is taking legal action against his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, and her attorneys, alleging defamation. This lawsuit intensifies the ongoing and public conflict between the congressman and the daughter of Ohio GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno.
The legal documents, lodged in Cuyahoga County and reviewed by POLITICO, detail Miller's claims that Emily Moreno and her legal representatives disseminated “false, malicious, and defamatory statements” that painted him as a violent spouse and father. Miller, who shares a daughter with his ex-wife, is also highlighting the adverse effects of Emily's mental health on their disputes. He is seeking damages of at least $25,000.
Miller’s lawsuit responds to what he perceives as a campaign to tarnish his reputation and impair his chances of reelection. He claims the allegations have led to lost business opportunities and reduced campaign contributions, and he intends to specify these financial losses at trial.
Earlier reports, including a detailed one by the Daily Mail, accused Miller of throwing boiling water at Emily Moreno in the presence of their child, supported by photographs of her injuries. Miller has refuted these claims on social media, accusing Emily's father, Sen. Moreno, of financing a harmful campaign against him due to her mental health issues.
The timing of Miller's lawsuit coincides with a broader scrutiny of unethical behavior in Congress. Recently, several lawmakers, including Reps. Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales, have resigned amid various allegations, putting additional pressure on Congress to address misconduct within its ranks vigorously.
A spokesperson for Miller emphasized the lawsuit aims to hold accountable those who have wronged him, seeking justice for the personal, professional, and political damages he has endured. Meanwhile, legal representatives for Emily Moreno have declined to comment on the ongoing legal battle, and a spokesperson for Sen. Moreno also remained silent on the issue.
This case adds to the complexities facing lawmakers today, as Congress continues to navigate the consequences of ethical and personal misconduct allegations among its members.
