Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy faces the toughest battle of his political career as he contends with two formidable primary challengers in a race that could define the future of the GOP in the state. As the primary election approaches this Saturday, Cassidy, a two-term incumbent, is wrestling with the backlash from his 2021 impeachment vote against former President Donald Trump. This decision has made him a target within his own party, with most polls placing him third behind Trump-endorsed Rep. Julia Letlow and State Treasurer John Fleming, another MAGA-aligned candidate.
Kevin Berken, Jefferson Davis Parish GOP chair, expressed the sentiment of many Cassidy detractors: "When it comes to stabbing Trump in the back with that vote to impeach, the memories are very long." Trump has continued his criticisms, labeling Cassidy “very disloyal” and urging Louisiana Republicans to vote him out. This sentiment echoes throughout the state as Cassidy’s alignment with Trump during the impeachment trials remains a significant point of contention.
Despite the odds, Cassidy's campaign remains optimistic. Mark Harris, Cassidy’s Campaign Manager, claims their data suggests a strong possibility for Cassidy to at least make it to a runoff, citing significant support from non-party voters in Louisiana’s closed primary system. "Our data indicates we have a very strong chance to put together a winning coalition, and then [win] in the run-off,” Harris stated confidently.
The senator has also faced criticism from the Make America Healthy Again coalition, further complicating his re-election efforts. His contentious encounters with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his block against health influencer Casey Means for U.S. Surgeon General have not gone unnoticed. The MAHA PAC has committed substantial resources to support Letlow, recognizing the significance of health-related issues in this election cycle.
Nonetheless, the split MAGA vote between Letlow and Fleming could offer Cassidy a lifeline. Fleming, boasting his credentials as the most conservative candidate and a former White House aide, believes his record speaks for itself. "Between them, I stand alone so I think that's the real driver of my lead on this,” Fleming remarked.
In the final stretch, Cassidy has sharpened his attacks on Letlow, attempting to paint her as "Liberal Letlow" due to her past support for diversity initiatives. However, Letlow has distanced herself from these programs, emphasizing her alignment with conservative values and the significant endorsement from Trump.
The outcome of this primary could very well come down to the wire, with many voters still undecided. According to Jamey Sandefur, chair of the Livingston Parish GOP, "I'm getting the sense that a lot of people are walking into the booth and deciding when they get there." This uncertainty makes the Trump endorsement a potentially decisive factor in an increasingly contentious race.
As Saturday’s vote approaches, the stakes are high not just for Cassidy but for the broader dynamics within the Louisiana GOP, signaling a potentially transformative shift influenced by loyalty, policy stances, and the enduring impact of former President Trump's endorsement.
