Bipartisan Effort in Senate Targets Rising Antisemitism with Comprehensive New Legislation

In a significant bipartisan move, Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV) are set to introduce a broad legislative bill on Tuesday designed to intensively combat the surge of antisemitism in the United States. The bill, revealed initially to POLITICO, aims to strengthen efforts against antisemitic activities in educational institutions and online platforms, and significantly increase funding for security grants.

According to Senator Lankford, the legislation addresses the most frequently discussed concerns within the Jewish community and beyond—education, online hate, and security. “We are trying to do this bipartisan, bicameral,” Lankford emphasized, highlighting the cooperative spirit driving the bill's introduction.

Senator Rosen, who co-chairs the Senate’s bipartisan task force for combating antisemitism alongside Lankford, described the bill as deeply personal and the result of over a year's meticulous planning. “It really is a coordinated federal response to help fight domestic antisemitism,” Rosen stated, underscoring the urgency and comprehensive nature of the proposed measures.

Key components of the bill include the establishment of an antisemitism coordinator within the Department of Education, who will oversee new regulations aimed at curbing antisemitic behavior and policies in federally funded colleges. These institutions will be required to implement non-discrimination policies and set up grievance mechanisms.

Moreover, the proposed legislation seeks to bolster nonprofit security grant funding to $1 billion, benefiting Jewish communities and enhancing security at various places of worship. Additionally, it mandates new transparency measures for how online platforms manage and counteract antisemitic content.

Rosen mentioned ongoing discussions with party leaders to identify effective strategies for advancing the bill through the Senate, possibly incorporating it into a larger defense policy package.

The initiative has garnered substantial support from various advocacy groups, including the American Jewish Committee, ADL, and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs. Eric Fingerhut, president and CEO of the Jewish Federations of North America, lauded the bill, calling it “one of the strongest congressional responses we have seen to the alarming rise in antisemitism and targeted violence against the Jewish community.”

With a companion bill expected to be introduced in the House soon, this legislative effort represents a critical step towards addressing and mitigating the increasing wave of antisemitic incidents across the nation.
