After a mysterious absence that sparked widespread speculation and concern, Representative Tom Kean Jr. has resumed communication, signaling a return to his congressional duties and political activities. Absent since early March, the Republican congressman from New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District has finally started reaching out, engaging with GOP county chairs and the media to reassure the public and his constituents about his health and political intentions.
On Thursday, Kean initiated a series of phone calls to Republican county chairs within his district, one of the most hotly contested regions in the upcoming midterm elections. This outreach was complemented by a comprehensive interview with the New Jersey Globe, where Kean discussed his health and future plans. This marked his first public communication since he last participated in a congressional vote on March 5.
Kean’s health, which has been shrouded in secrecy, was addressed during his interview. He disclosed that while he has been battling an undisclosed illness, he is on the path to a full recovery, as confirmed by his medical team. He assured that his condition would not impact his cognitive abilities and expressed his commitment to running for re-election. However, specific details about his illness remain under wraps, with Kean promising to share more information at a later, unspecified date.
“My doctors are confident that I’m on the road to a full recovery,” Kean told the New Jersey Globe. “I understand the need for public transparency, and I appreciate the support of my constituents.”
In addition to his media engagement, Kean’s conversations with local GOP leaders were positively received. Carlos Santos, the Republican chair of Union County, noted that Kean sounded healthy and upbeat. "He sounded good to me. Sounded just as normal as always,” Santos commented, adding that Kean confirmed his re-election bid during their conversation.
Similarly, Tracy DiFrancesco, the GOP chair of Somerset County, shared her relief and enthusiasm following her discussion with Kean. “It was just a simple conversation. He sounded just like Tom always sounds. He sounded perfectly fine. He’s basically back. Hopefully, we’re going to see him very soon,” she said.
The congressman's return to activity comes at a critical time as the campaign season intensifies, with four Democrats vying for his seat in the upcoming June 2 primary. Kean’s re-engagement with his district and the political landscape suggests a soon resumption of his full public and legislative duties, with assurances of his return to voting and campaigning within the next few weeks, as echoed by Rep. Richard Hudson, chair of the House GOP’s campaign arm.
As Kean navigates his recovery and re-election campaign, the coming weeks will be pivotal for the congressman as he works to rebuild trust and maintain his foothold in a fiercely competitive district.
