The Great American State Fair, set to unfold on the National Mall from June 25 to July 10, will mark the 250th anniversary of the United States with a strong conservative presence, organized by Freedom 250. This nonprofit, initiated by President Donald Trump and his allies, stands in contrast to America250, a bipartisan group created by Congress to commemorate this historic occasion.
Freedom 250 has announced a lineup of predominantly conservative groups set to feature at the fair, including America Prays, the American Principles Project, and the Association of Mature American Citizens, alongside institutions like Hillsdale College and Focus on the Family. Their presence has sparked criticism from some quarters, with Democrats accusing Trump of politicizing what should be a unifying national celebration.
Controversy has also touched the fair's organization, with accusations from Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) about potential partisanship and opaque fundraising practices by Freedom 250. Despite these tensions, the fair aims to be a "living showcase of America’s past, present, and future," boasting over 100 booths representing various states and institutions, including non-political entities like C-SPAN, Meta, and John Deere.
Steve Gatena, CEO of Pray.com, expressed enthusiasm about participating, highlighting the opportunity to promote faith and community through technology. Meanwhile, artist Scott LoBaido will contribute live art, known for his provocative portrayals of political figures.
However, not all are embracing the event. States such as Connecticut, Illinois, and Massachusetts have opted out, though other institutions from these states will participate. This follows a fallout with several musicians who withdrew from performing after learning about the fair's political ties, prompting Trump to convert the occasion into a pre-fair rally on June 24.
Rachel Reisner, a spokesperson for Freedom 250, emphasized the inclusive aim of the event, stating, "Americans have been arguing at the dinner table for 250 years and still show up to the same Fourth of July party. The Great American State Fair is a celebration for America, which includes every single star on that flag."
As the fair approaches, it remains to be seen how these dynamics will play out in the public sphere and whether the event will bridge divides or deepen them.
