Stars Align: Croatia Celebrates World Cup Aspirations with John Malkovich and Luka Modrić in Virginia

It seemed like the setup for a classic bar joke: John Malkovich, NBA legend Toni Kukoč, and Croatian soccer hero Luka Modrić walking into a bar. However, this was no jest but rather a star-studded event held at the AKA Hotel in Alexandria, Va., this past Saturday evening.

The occasion was a lavish reception thrown by the Croatian National Tourist Board, celebrating the Croatian soccer team's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The glamorous rooftop gathering attracted a diverse crowd, including athletes, business moguls, diplomats, and members of the Croatian-American community, all united in their support for Croatia’s quest for global recognition through soccer.

Soccer is more than just a game for Croatia; it is a strategic avenue for amplifying national pride and visibility. The country, with a population just shy of four million, has impressively reached the World Cup finals in 2018 and the semifinals in 2022. "This tournament serves as a powerful platform to promote our country," remarked Kristjan Staničić, director of the Croatian National Tourist Board. He highlighted how pivotal the World Cup is in strengthening Croatia’s image globally, especially in lucrative markets like the U.S., where interest in Croatia as a travel destination has been on the rise post-pandemic.

Staničić expressed optimism about the impact of the World Cup on tourism, especially from American tourists who are now viewing Croatia as a desirable destination beyond the summer season. The event also served as a stage to celebrate Croatia’s burgeoning list of celebrity endorsers. Tonči Glavina, the Croatian Minister of Tourism and Sports, named several top-tier athletes, including LeBron James and Rafael Nadal, as among those boosting Croatia's international allure.

The evening was not just about football and tourism. Celebrated actor John Malkovich, who was granted Croatian citizenship during the event, shared the spotlight with CBS Sports executive Pete Radovich to discuss an upcoming project designed to further promote Croatian tourism. Radovich, sharing amusing anecdotes from his experiences with celebrities discovering their Croatian heritage, underscored the deep, personal connections that enrich these promotional efforts.

Looking ahead to Croatia's upcoming match against England, Staničić was brimming with confidence. "Our team is strong, and I believe we have what it takes to reach the final, provided we avoid any injuries," he stated confidently.

This unique blend of celebrity glamour, cultural pride, and athletic ambition underscores Croatia's multifaceted strategy to not just compete on the soccer field but to win hearts and minds across the globe, reinforcing its stature on the world stage.
