World Cup Watch: New York and New Jersey's Network of Command Centers

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — As the World Cup unfolds, a web of command centers across New York and New Jersey have come alive, monitoring every aspect of the event with a vigilance that spans from local to international efforts. These hubs of activity, located as far apart as Miami and Brooklyn, are the nerve centers for managing the logistics and safety of the eight matches scheduled at MetLife Stadium.

The variety and number of these operations centers are as diverse as their locations. From the New Jersey State Police to the New York Police Department, and including multiple transit authorities and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, each unit has carved out its own command space. Whether it’s a permanent facility decked with massive screens or a temporary setup tailored for the tournament, these centers are bustling with activity. FIFA itself maintains a strategic operations center in Miami, underscoring the global coordination at play.

The command center in Trenton, New Jersey, however, takes a lead role, acting as the primary hub among the various operational sites. According to Lt. Col. David Sierotowicz, deputy superintendent of the New Jersey State Police and the World Cup incident commander, while each center has its specific tasks, they all ultimately feed into the Area Command Center (ACC). This ACC oversees the broader regional impacts and coordinates resource allocation across venues.

The significance of these centers was highlighted by a visit from New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill. She toured an operations center strategically placed on an elevated platform in the MetLife Stadium parking lot. Such visits underscore the critical role these centers play in ensuring the smooth execution of the event's logistics and security measures.

Adding to the complexity, the region will host another major event over the July 4 weekend — a grand military parade and airshow expected to draw President Donald Trump. This event will necessitate yet another command center, this time a federal setup at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan.

These command centers, with their myriad of monitors and flurry of officials, ensure that while the World Cup may be a spectacle enjoyed by millions around the globe, behind the scenes it's a carefully orchestrated event safeguarded by countless professionals across a network of control rooms.
