French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari Champions International Cooperation in NYC Event

French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari visited New York City to show her support for the French national team ahead of their upcoming World Cup match against Iraq. During her visit, she attended a special event at the French consulate opposite Central Park, organized by Business France. The event focused on the economic opportunities arising from the World Cup, hosted this year by three countries.

Panel discussions featured prominent figures such as Philippe Diallo, President of the French Football Federation, Jeanny Pak, interim CEO of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, and representatives from the NFL and the New Orleans Saints. The latter are set to make history by playing the first professional American football game in France this fall.

In her remarks, Ferrari emphasized the importance of Franco-American cooperation, extending beyond sports to include America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations. "France will be, as it always has been, at your side," she affirmed.

Post-event, in a press interview, Ferrari tackled several sensitive topics including the political activism of French footballers like Kylian Mbappé, the influence of Qatari investment in French sports, particularly football, and the adaptation of the World Cup format to include quarter breaks potentially filled with commercials.

Addressing the changes in World Cup gameplay, Ferrari explained, "In France, we've engaged with broadcasters to avoid advertising during game pauses. With climate change, we must adapt, but it’s crucial not to commercialize these moments excessively."

On the subject of athletes expressing political opinions, Ferrari stated that players, as citizens, are entitled to their viewpoints. However, she suggested that national representation should take precedence during games. "They are free to express themselves, but should pause while wearing the French shirt," she noted.

Looking ahead to future international sporting events, including the Winter Olympics in 2030, Ferrari discussed the challenges posed by climate change, particularly the uncertainty of snow. She highlighted the need for innovative, sustainable methods to produce snow without compromising public water supplies.

When questioned about the dominance of Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain in French football, Ferrari expressed pride in the club's achievements. Dismissing the negative sentiments associated with foreign investments in sports, she confidently stated, "We are lucky to have such a club, so don’t count on me to say bad words."

Ferrari's visit to New York not only underscored her support for French athletes but also her commitment to strengthening Franco-American relations through sports and beyond.
