Turek Takes Slim Lead Over Hinson in Iowa Senate Showdown, Poll Reveals

In a surprising twist in Iowa’s political landscape, Democratic Senate nominee Josh Turek has edged ahead of his Republican adversary, Ashley Hinson, in the latest internal poll targeting likely voters for the upcoming general election. The poll, conducted by Global Strategy Group from June 8 to June 11, shows Turek leading with a narrow margin of 47 percent to Hinson’s 45 percent among 1,000 polled voters.

Despite the Republican party holding a significant advantage in voter registration—42 percent compared to the Democrats' 32 percent—and the state’s previous support for Donald Trump by a 9-point lead in the last presidential election, Turek’s performance suggests a potential shift in Iowa’s political currents. The same poll highlighted Trump’s declining favorability within the state, standing at 45 percent favorable against 52 percent unfavorable. This sentiment is even more pronounced among registered independents, where Trump’s favorability is down by 28 points.

Analysts from Global Strategy Group, Matt Canter and Ramzi Ebbini, noted in a memo that Turek is “significantly outperforming the state’s underlying partisan dynamics.” They pointed out that while Republicans maintain substantial advantages in terms of voter registration and party identification, Turek’s personal favorability ratings and his appeal beyond traditional Democratic supporters place him in a favorable position as the race heats up.

Furthermore, some Republicans have voiced concerns about the political landscape in Iowa, particularly regarding issues like trade and tariffs, which are pivotal for the state’s large agricultural sector. A Republican insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, admitted these are critical issues that need addressing.

Capitalizing on these sentiments, Turek’s campaign has sharply focused on economic messages that resonate with local concerns, particularly those of farmers who feel let down by current policies. “Josh Turek is winning this race because Iowans are sick and tired of multi-millionaire politicians like Ashley Hinson who sell out working families while they get rich,” stated Turek for Iowa campaign manager Brendan Koch. He emphasized the campaign’s commitment to reaching out to Iowans across the state and political spectrum over the next 134 days.

As the campaign intensifies, all eyes will be on Iowa to see if Turek can maintain his lead and possibly redefine the political alignment in this traditionally conservative stronghold.
