Democratic Socialists Emerge Victorious in New York, Eyeing 2028 Presidential Campaign

Democratic socialists have initiated a seismic shift within the Democratic Party, following a series of emphatic wins in New York City. In a bold statement of intent, they are now setting their sights on the 2028 presidential elections. This comes after a strategic victory in the recent New York congressional primaries, where candidates backed by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani ousted establishment politicians, signaling a growing influence of the left wing.

Megan Romer, the national co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), highlighted the group's intent to challenge the status quo within the Democratic Party by pushing for representation in the upcoming presidential primaries. "We need to offer an alternative, and it's vital we're part of the conversation in 2028," Romer stated, emphasizing the need for a fresh political perspective.

The DSA isn't wasting any time and has already launched a comprehensive candidate selection process. This summer, the organization will send out surveys to its 250 chapters nationwide, asking members to nominate and support potential candidates. The results will culminate in a series of national discussions and a formal vote slated for the 2027 DSA convention, though this timeline could accelerate depending on the primary schedule demands.

Although the charismatic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez remains a prominent figure within the movement, DSA leaders assert that she, like any other candidate, would need to undergo the same rigorous endorsement process. Romer pointed out, "She will have to sell her campaign just like anyone else. We don't do kingmakers here."

The relationship between Ocasio-Cortez and the DSA has seen its ups and downs. Despite initial strong support from the DSA for her 2018 campaign, tensions surfaced in 2024 when national leaders conditioned their reelection endorsement on her stance regarding Israel, a move that sparked controversy within the organization.

In addition to Ocasio-Cortez, Mayor Mamdani's name has also been floated around as a potential candidate. However, his ineligibility for the presidency due to not being a natural-born U.S. citizen has limited serious consideration, though it remains a topic of light-hearted speculation within the group.

The recent victories in New York are part of a broader national effort by the DSA to establish a stronger foothold in American politics, reflecting a strategic push to extend their influence beyond their traditionally urban, progressive strongholds. As noted by Bhaskar Sunkara, former vice-chair of the DSA, "The sheer scale of what just happened in New York is historic. It's a massive boon for the democratic socialist movement."

As the DSA continues to build momentum, they aim to reshape the Democratic Party's approach to key issues, advocating for policies that more closely align with the needs and aspirations of their base. With the 2028 presidential race on the horizon, the recent developments signify a critical juncture for the Democratic Party, potentially heralding a shift towards more progressive, grassroots-driven politics.
