Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna is spearheading a controversial blockade in the House, causing a significant delay in the passage of key GOP bills, including the annual defense policy bill. Luna’s actions, driven by her insistence that the Senate pass a stringent elections overhaul known as the SAVE America Act, have created a rift within her party and disrupted the House's schedule, potentially for the next week.
Luna, aligning closely with former President Donald Trump, has declared her unwillingness to compromise on the elections bill, which is currently stalled in the Senate due to lack of support and controversial requirements. “It's not my job to play trust games with the Senate when they've actively betrayed our trust multiple times,” Luna stated, underscoring her backing by Trump.
This stance has stirred frustrations among many Republicans, even those supportive of the elections overhaul. Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) expressed concern over Luna’s tactics. “She's going to have to start being a team player here,” Jackson said. “I mean, you can't be a team of one.”
The deadlock has led to the cancellation of votes on significant legislation this week, including two fiscal 2027 appropriations bills. Speaker Mike Johnson has been forced to consider telling members not to return for the upcoming week’s legislative business, highlighting the severity of the impasse.
Johnson is actively seeking a resolution and is scheduled to meet with Trump to discuss potential solutions. Meanwhile, Luna remains adamant, pushing to attach the SAVE America Act to the Pentagon bill or another must-pass bill, a move that lacks broad support within the party and risks derailing critical legislation.
The infighting and Luna’s tactics, perceived by some as mirroring Trump’s hardball approach, have left many in the GOP exasperated as they approach the midterm elections. Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY) likened the situation to “beating your dog because your neighbor won’t cut his grass.”
Despite the growing frustrations, Luna’s close relationship with Trump has shielded her from significant internal backlash. She frequently communicates with the former president and is one of the few Republicans with walk-in privileges to the Oval Office.
As the House grapples with this deadlock, Luna remains a pivotal figure in the ongoing debate over election integrity and legislative strategy, her influence underscored by her direct line to Trump and her determined stance on the elections bill. House leaders and members await the outcome of Johnson’s discussions with Trump, hoping for a breakthrough that will allow the legislative process to resume.
