HOLLYWOOD, Florida — As the World Cup fervor grips Miami Gardens with the highly anticipated match between Colombia and Portugal, a significant political event is set to draw its own crowd in nearby Hollywood. The Florida GOP is hosting its "Sunshine State Showdown" at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, bringing together the state's most fervent Republican supporters.
This event, one of the Florida GOP’s largest annual gatherings, has already sold over 800 tickets. Attendees include key volunteers, donors from across the state, and top Republican candidates. They will engage in strategic discussions, listen to speeches from influential figures like Sens. Rick Scott and Ashley Moody, and witness debates between congressional hopefuls.
The timing of the GOP event alongside the World Cup match has sparked excitement among many attendees. Kevin Cooper, the GOP Chair for Miami-Dade County, remarked on the economic surge in South Florida and noted, "Miami is again at the center of the universe." The region not only enjoys a booming economy but is also set to house Donald Trump’s future presidential library and host the G20 summit in December.
State Rep. Dean Black expressed his enthusiasm for the international exposure, stating, "They have fallen in love with the greatness of America." He sees the Republican Party's event as an opportunity to showcase how this greatness is achieved. Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, although not attending the game, voiced his pleasure at Florida hosting global fans, helping them experience the state's beauty.
Ryan Elijah, a former news anchor and GOP congressional candidate, plans on keeping up with World Cup updates during the event. "What a night for Florida to see the biggest names in Florida politics and World Cup soccer be just miles apart!” he texted. “It's a dream night for tourism numbers and local businesses!”
However, the convergence of these major events could pose logistical challenges. The Hard Rock Hotel is less than 9 miles from Miami Stadium and serves as a shuttle pickup point, potentially complicating travel plans for attendees. Angie Wong, a Republican executive committeewoman who experienced significant delays during a previous match, highlighted the potential for traffic issues.
This year’s “Showdown” has been scaled back compared to previous years, omitting a dinner and lacking major Trump administration officials, unlike last year. This might be beneficial for those trying to avoid missing the World Cup match or getting stuck in traffic.
Despite these challenges, Evan Power, chair of the state party, reported smooth operations upon his early arrival at the Hard Rock Hotel. The GOP's planning seems to have mitigated some of the logistical concerns, with Power noting, "In our room block, people are happy because they're not paying the market rate that is out there."
As Florida becomes a hotspot for both political and sports enthusiasts this weekend, the events are set to showcase the state's cultural and economic prowess, albeit with the challenge of managing an influx of visitors and ensuring smooth experiences for all attendees.
