Iranian Diplomat Criticizes VAR After World Cup Exit, Hails Team's Heroic Effort

In a heartfelt reflection on Iran's journey in the FIFA World Cup, the Iranian ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, issued a poignant statement following the national team's exit from the tournament. While praising the team's efforts, Pasandideh also voiced strong criticism over the role of video assistant referee (VAR) technology, which he referred to as "pseudo-VAR."

According to Ambassador Pasandideh's statement to POLITICO, the Iranian team faced multiple challenges that went beyond the typical rigors of competitive play. "Our players contended with not just their opponents on the field, but also fatigue, injustice, and other hardships that seldom were captured by the cameras," he remarked.

The ambassador expressed particular concern over the implementation of VAR during the matches, suggesting that the technology interfered inappropriately in the natural flow of the game. "Perhaps some balls fell just centimeters short of bringing joy to millions of Iranians — centimeters that were not even measured by the linesman’s flag, yet were magnified by 'pseudo-VAR' interventions," stated Pasandideh. He emphasized that despite these challenges, the team's determination remained unshaken.

FIFA has yet to respond to these comments or to requests for comments on the matter.

In his statement, Pasandideh also drew parallels between the players and iconic figures in Persian mythology such as Arash and Rostam, elevating the team's efforts to a national, heroic status. "True championship lies in loyalty to the flag," he asserted, commending the players for their dedication and spirit.

Addressing the team directly, he referred to the players as the "brave sons of Iran," applauding their willingness to sacrifice for their country. Pasandideh concluded with a forward-looking perspective, expressing confidence that the national team would emerge "stronger, more experienced, and more brilliant" in future competitions.

As the World Cup progresses without Iran, the debate around the use of VAR and its impact on the game continues to stir discussions among fans and officials alike. Meanwhile, the Iranian team's performance, marked by both controversy and commendation, will likely be remembered for its intensity and the fierce patriotism displayed by its players and supporters.
