MIAMI — As Argentina faces Cape Verde in today’s highly anticipated match, Miami officials are implementing stringent security protocols and heat safety measures to ensure a smooth and safe experience for all attendees.

The last encounter involving Argentina in Miami Gardens during the Copa América final in July 2024 was marred by chaos when fans without tickets breached the stadium's security perimeters, leading to arrests and a delayed game start. An after-action report by Miami-Dade County highlighted several security shortcomings, including inadequate intelligence and insufficient security barriers.

In response, Miami-Dade Emergency Management has ramped up its training across various threat scenarios to boost coordination and preparedness among local, state, and federal partners. "Miami-Dade is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all participants during major events," stated Dianne Fernandez, spokesperson for county Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz of the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office detailed the new security measures at a recent press conference. Enhanced training, specialized equipment, and multiple ticket checks will be enforced to prevent unauthorized access to the venue.

Adding to the security challenges is the oppressive heat affecting the eastern U.S., with temperatures soaring into the triple digits. Public health officials have expressed concerns about the potential health risks, particularly in combination with alcohol consumption, which can exacerbate dehydration.

To combat the heat, local authorities have adapted their protocols as the World Cup progresses. Cooling stations have been set up at Miami Stadium, providing air-conditioned relief for fans and staff. Additionally, the county has made water trailers and refill stations available at public transit stops, promoting hydration among spectators.

Mayor Levine Cava emphasized the dual focus on security and health: "Miami-Dade is proud to welcome the world to our County to celebrate this historic moment, and we want every resident and visitor to enjoy the experience safely. Heat is not a game — and in Miami-Dade, we know it.”
