UK Lib Dems Champion Extended Pub Hours for World Cup, Eyeing Further Celebrations

LONDON — As England gears up for a crucial World Cup match against Mexico, the Liberal Democrats are celebrating a victory off the field — securing extended pub hours for fans back home. The third-largest party in Westminster has successfully pressured Prime Minister Keir Starmer into passing a last-minute law allowing pubs to remain open late, ensuring supporters can watch the game with a pint in hand despite the late kickoff.

The issue came to the forefront after England's first knockout win guaranteed a late game in Mexico City, starting at 1:00 am UK time. With matches potentially stretching to 3:45 am, traditional pub closing times would have cut short the viewing for many. Although Local Government Secretary Steve Reed initially urged councils to relax closing times, resistance persisted in some areas.

In response, the Lib Dems proposed a unified approach to prevent a patchy implementation across the country. This initiative was spearheaded in the House of Commons by Lib Dem MP Max Wilkinson, who faced opposition from Business Minister Kate Dearden. However, in a turn of events, Starmer later announced a policy shift, extending pub hours until 5 a.m. nationwide, thus bypassing the need for council approvals.

Starmer's announcement was a strategic retreat, quipping, "Football might be coming home, but we’re making sure fans don’t have to." Yet, it's the Liberal Democrats who are keen on claiming this legislative goal. Party leader Ed Davey took to social media to assert that Starmer’s decision was a direct result of their advocacy, positioning the Lib Dems as the true champions of football fans.

The party isn't stopping there. Buoyed by their success, they are now advocating for another popular cause — a knighthood for England striker Harry Kane. This proposal, introduced by MP Layla Moran, signals the Lib Dems' intent to stay in the spotlight, connecting national sports achievements with their legislative efforts.

As England fans prepare for tonight's match, they can toast to the Liberal Democrats, who've ensured that no matter the result at Estadio Azteca, celebrations can continue unabated back home.
