Democratic Socialists Heat Up the Summer: Major Moves in Michigan and Wisconsin

It's hot outside, but the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are even hotter. After clinching significant primary victories in Colorado and New York, the DSA is now setting its sights on two critical swing states: Michigan and Wisconsin. With progressive momentum at their back, DSA officials are moving resources and volunteers to support key candidates in these battlegrounds.

In Michigan, progressive Abdul El-Sayed is a standout in a competitive three-way Democratic primary for the Senate. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, DSA-backed Francesca Hong is making waves in the governor's race. Both candidates are planning major rallies to galvanize support, with discussions underway to bring high-profile DSA-aligned figures, including New York and Colorado primary victors, to boost their campaigns. Notably, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is expected to visit Michigan to support El-Sayed, following her recent endorsement.

Emma Vigeland of The Majority Report highlighted the DSA's summer success, noting, "We’re seeing the culmination of 10 years of democratic socialism becoming more mainstream." The challenge now is to maintain this momentum and build the necessary infrastructure to secure victories in these competitive states.

Prominent figures like Twitch streamer Hasan Piker and Rep. Rashida Tlaib are already on the campaign trail, lending their influence to bolster the DSA's efforts. Furthermore, the DSA has seen a surge in membership, with over 7,500 new members joining nationwide since the New York victories.

Francesca Hong, in an interview, pushed back against skeptics doubting the viability of democratic socialists in swing states. "More and more folks are recognizing that the system is rigged and they deserve a more democratic economy," she stated. Hong, who recently raised over $50,000 in under an hour on Piker's stream, plans to continue her innovative campaign approach, including engaging with voters in unexpected venues like bike rides and dive bars.

In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed's campaign is drawing significant attention, with endorsements from influential figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez. The state is poised to be a critical battleground for the DSA this August.

Despite some setbacks in California, where DSA-backed candidates faced defeats, the organization remains focused on translating its national energy into electoral success. Megan Romer, a national co-chair of the DSA, emphasized the importance of channeling grassroots excitement into structured movement growth.

As the primaries approach, both Michigan and Wisconsin are shaping up to be crucial tests for the DSA's ability to extend its influence beyond deeply progressive districts and into broader statewide contests. With continued organizing efforts and high-profile support, the Democratic Socialists of America are poised to make significant inroads in these key battlegrounds.
