Trump Denies Influencing FIFA to Overturn Soccer Star's Red Card Amid Global Controversy

President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that he had contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the red card issued to American soccer player Folarin Balogun during a crucial World Cup knockout match. Despite this, Trump insisted he exerted no undue influence on the decision to overturn the penalty, a move that has ignited international debate over presidential interference in sports.

Balogun's red card, initially given during a game against Bosnia and Herzegovina, was controversially suspended by FIFA, leading to widespread speculation, fueled by a POLITICO report, about Trump's involvement. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump acknowledged his communication with Infantino but clarified his role. "Yes, I asked for a review by FIFA," he stated, adding, "All I did was ask for a review. I didn’t say that you have to do this."

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, including European soccer federations and the European Commission, which has called for "fair play and transparent competition." Belgian officials, whose national team faced the U.S. following the suspension, expressed significant concerns and formally challenged FIFA’s ruling.

Trump described his initial reaction to the on-field incident, which led to Balogun's red card, as one of confusion, remarking on the perceived unfairness of barring the player from future games. "It is one thing to penalize somebody for the game," he said. "But how do you penalize him for a game that hasn’t been played yet?"

Amidst the controversy, Trump also took a moment to criticize the referee responsible for Balogun's red card, Brazilian official Raphael Claus, suggesting a check into his past might reveal biases. Despite the furor, the President remained a staunch defender of the World Cup's success, stating that an upheld red card would have marred the tournament.

As for potential diplomatic repercussions with Belgium, whose foreign minister has publicly voiced dismay over the incident, Trump expressed willingness to engage in discussions. "I haven’t spoken with the Belgian prime minister, but I would be open to it," he conveyed.

Concluding his remarks, Trump hinted at a conciliatory tone towards the Belgian team, emphasizing that their victory would be commendable under the circumstances. "The people of Belgium, if they win the game, they can be very proud," he noted, acknowledging the tension surrounding the upcoming match influenced by Balogun's participation.
