France is rallying behind football star Kylian Mbappé following a series of racially charged comments by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla. The controversy erupted after France defeated Paraguay in a nail-biting World Cup round-of-16 match, with Amarilla targeting Mbappé in a derogatory and racially insensitive manner.
Amarilla, who belongs to the centrist Authentic Radical Liberal Party, called Mbappé a “brute,” mocked his intelligence, and cast aspersions on his French identity by labeling him a “colonized Cameroonian pretending to be French.” These remarks have drawn sharp criticism across France, a nation that prides itself on its multicultural identity, especially exemplified by its diverse national football team.
French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari condemned the comments as “abhorrent” and particularly reprehensible coming from an elected official. Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire also expressed his dismay, emphasizing on social media platform X that “the France team looks like France, and Kylian Mbappé is one of the greatest representatives of our country.”
This incident has reignited the ongoing debate in France about national identity and the role of immigrants and their descendants in society. The French national team, celebrated for its diversity, has often been at the heart of this discourse, reflecting broader societal issues particularly in the aftermath of major sports events.
Responding to the senator’s comments, Mbappé took to X to express his disdain, stating, “You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay.” He accused Amarilla of allowing racism to overshadow what could have been a unifying sporting achievement.
The French Football Federation is taking legal action against Amarilla, stating, “The racist comments made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla toward Kylian Mbappé are utterly vile and unacceptable. These statements are criminal and condemnable. They must be prosecuted here and everywhere.”
As the incident continues to unfold, it serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that still persist in sports and society at large when it comes to racism and discrimination. France, united in its support for Mbappé, shows a strong front against racial abuse, advocating for respect and unity both on and off the field.
