In a decisive turn of events, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has publicly advised Maine Democrat Graham Platner to halt his Senate campaign following serious sexual assault allegations. This recommendation came shortly after a damning report by POLITICO, which highlighted accusations from a woman claiming Platner had forced her into non-consensual sexual acts.
Sanders stated, “I have spoken with Graham Platner about the best path forward for Maine. In light of these very serious allegations, I have recommended that he step aside.” This statement marks Sanders' first public comment regarding Platner since the allegations surfaced. Previously, Sanders had supported Platner through various other controversies.
Platner has fervently denied the accusations, asserting this week that "any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue." Despite his denial, the fallout has been swift and significant, with numerous Democratic officials and entities withdrawing their support. This includes the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and a major Senate super PAC, both of which declared they could no longer back his candidacy against Republican Senator Susan Collins.
The situation escalated when POLITICO published details from Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old Maine resident who alleged that Platner forcibly entered her home and assaulted her nearly five years ago. This report has seemingly been the tipping point, leading to a broad retraction of support from many within the Democratic Party, who had previously stood by Platner during earlier scandals involving controversial social media posts and a Nazi-linked tattoo.
In the wake of these allegations, Platner released a video stating he was “taking the time to reflect on the best path forward” for his campaign. Maine law dictates that if Platner decides to step down, he must do so by July 13. The state Democratic Party would then need to name a replacement by July 27.
The response from Sanders, who had endorsed and campaigned for Platner, underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential ramifications for the Democratic Party in Maine. As the political landscape reacts to these developments, the future of this Senate seat hangs in balance, with the Democratic Party scrambling to find a viable candidate to maintain its competitiveness in the upcoming election.
