Nirav Shah, who gained statewide recognition as the former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has officially announced his candidacy to fill the seat vacated by Graham Platner. Shah, who recently contended in the Democratic primary for governor, is now setting his sights on a broader political horizon following Platner’s unexpected withdrawal from the race on Wednesday evening.
Although Shah was a visible presence on the political scene even before his formal announcement, participating in interviews and advocating for an open and transparent candidate selection process, his Thursday declaration on social media has solidified his commitment to pursue the role. “Establishment politicians have failed us,” Shah stated on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “To defeat Susan Collins, we need an outsider who is not afraid to take on the broken system she has spent decades upholding.”
Shah's tenure at Maine CDC, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, not only bolstered his reputation but also significantly increased his visibility across the state. Despite branding himself as a progressive, Shah maintains a critical distance from Platner, who notably did not back Shah in the gubernatorial primary's ranked-choice endorsement.
In his social media announcement, Shah reflected on his career and his readiness to lead. “I’m proud to have dedicated my career to public service, and to have delivered for Mainers in our darkest times,” he said. “Now, in this unprecedented moment, I’m ready to unite our party and fight for you once again.”
As the race heats up with multiple Democrats eyeing the seat, Shah’s blend of healthcare expertise and outsider appeal might just set him apart in a field crowded with traditional politicians. His campaign is expected to focus on uniting the Democratic Party and harnessing the widespread recognition and respect he has earned through his public service to champion progressive causes and challenge the status quo in Maine politics.
