EU Parliament Members Demand Investigation into FIFA and Infantino Following Trump's Intervention

Seventy-two European Parliament members have called for an immediate investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino's conduct after a controversial decision to overturn a red card suspension of U.S. soccer star Folarin Balogun. The move came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump personally intervened, phoning Infantino to advocate for Balogun, who was initially banned following a game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The incident has sparked outrage among EU lawmakers, who in a letter addressed to the national football federations of the EU's 27 member countries, criticized FIFA’s mid-tournament rule change as a "disgrace" and a "perversion of justice." The letter, penned by Renew MEP Barry Andrews and obtained by POLITICO, accuses Infantino and FIFA of capitulating to political pressure from the Trump administration.

Despite the reinstatement of Balogun, the U.S. team suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium, whose players notably mocked President Trump's dancing after scoring. This game highlighted not only the tensions within the match but also underscored the broader political implications of FIFA's decision.

The call for an investigation is not isolated. Previously, Andrews and other MEPs have penned letters to FIFA, urging an examination of Infantino's actions concerning the organization’s political neutrality rules and his decisions regarding the participation of Russian athletes in youth competitions.

The latest letter has garnered significant support, with signatories from six different parliamentary groups, marking it as a robust bipartisan effort. "Not many issues can garner that level of bipartisan support," commented Andrews, reflecting on the widespread backing the initiative has received.

FIFA has yet to respond to the allegations and the request for an investigation. The controversy continues to unfold, putting additional pressure on FIFA's governance and its adherence to its own ethical codes amidst global scrutiny.
