The French national soccer team touched down in Dallas on Sunday aboard an Airbus A320, a jet that just the day before had been utilized for an ICE deportation flight to Nicaragua. The French team, currently participating in the World Cup, uses GlobalX for their charter flights, a Miami-based airline involved in both regular charter operations and deportation flights initiated by the Trump administration's mass deportation policy.

This particular aircraft's dual use starkly illustrates the broader political and social tensions surrounding U.S. immigration policies. While many Americans support the deportation of unauthorized immigrants, the aggressive tactics employed in these deportations under President Trump’s administration have sparked significant controversy and protests.

POLITICO revealed that the plane carrying the French team, known under the legal name Global Crossing Airlines, had previously conducted 323 ICE flights. "This plane’s frequent transition from deporting individuals to transporting international sports teams highlights some unsettling ironies in our current political landscape," said Savi Arvey, a policy director at Human Rights First.

After completing its mission in Nicaragua, the jet made a stop in Harlingen, Texas, a key node in ICE’s operational network, before heading to Boston to pick up the French team. Approximately 15 hours later, the team was en route to Dallas. Shortly after their arrival, the jet was back in the air, headed to Harlingen for another deportation flight, this time to Mexico.

In contrast, the Spanish national team arrived in Dallas on an American Airlines jet, which has not been used for deportation flights. The difference in the service providers for these teams casts a light on the various approaches airlines take towards involvement in governmental deportation operations.

The French football federation and GlobalX have yet to respond to media inquiries regarding their choice of airline amidst the ongoing controversy. Meanwhile, the use of such jets for deportations and then for transporting sports teams continues to be a topic of heated discussion, reflecting the complex intersections of sports, politics, and human rights in today’s global environment.
