Sen. John Cornyn has put a significant roadblock in front of Todd Blanche’s potential confirmation as attorney general, demanding a rewrite of the settlement President Donald Trump previously reached with the IRS. This opposition from the Texas Republican raises stakes for an upcoming Judiciary Committee vote this Thursday, which could determine Blanche’s fate.

Cornyn has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with specific elements in the settlement, particularly a contentious $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” and expansive tax audit immunities for the president and his family. Despite ongoing discussions with Blanche and the Justice Department, these changes have yet to be finalized or documented as Cornyn insists.

“We’re talking about that. That hasn’t been fully resolved yet,” Cornyn expressed to reporters, underscoring the uncertainty over whether Trump himself needs to sign the revised agreement. “We're still talking. I mean, there's different ways to approach it.”

The urgency is mounting as the committee vote looms. Cornyn's hard stance on needing a signed modification could potentially derail Blanche’s nomination, reflecting the precarious balance of power and the intricate negotiations behind the scenes. The senator highlighted that, despite Blanche’s testimony last week dismissing the viability of the payout fund and limiting the audit agreement, the existing wording of the settlement allows for potential revivals of these provisions.

“That's what we're trying to get them to agree to, which is again what his sworn testimony was,” Cornyn said, puzzled over the reluctance from Blanche and the administration to commit to a written agreement. “So I don't know why they're so reluctant to do that.”

As the clock ticks down to the critical vote, the pressure intensifies for Blanche to conform to Cornyn’s demands. Without it, his nomination could face a grim outcome. The White House and the Department of Justice have yet to respond to these developments.
