The late-night Sunday announcement detailed a Justice Department adjustment to a May settlement, which had sparked significant controversy and debate. This adjustment appears to have assuaged concerns among certain GOP senators, paving the way for a likely confirmation of Blanche on the Senate floor, anticipated later this week before the August recess.

In a joint statement, Senators Cornyn and Tillis expressed their satisfaction with the resolution of issues surrounding the “Anti-Weaponization Fund” and certain immunity provisions that initially protected Trump and his family from some tax audits. “We want to express our gratitude to Mr. Blanche and his staff for working with us on this, and we look forward to voting to advance his nomination out of the Senate Judiciary Committee soon,” they stated.

The senators highlighted the Justice Department’s formal order to terminate the controversial fund and clarified the limited scope of the audit settlement to just the plaintiffs involved, addressing broader GOP concerns. “The Department has acknowledged in a binding written order that the audit settlement is limited to the plaintiffs and the scope does not extend beyond the defendants in the lawsuit, the IRS and the Treasury,” Cornyn and Tillis elaborated.

This development comes as Blanche actively engages with other Republican senators who have voiced their unease about the settlement, such as Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, John Curtis of Utah, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.
