Florida GOP Primary Shakeup: Two Republican Representatives Endorse Challenger Over Trump-Backed Incumbent

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — In a surprising turn of events, Florida's political landscape saw a significant shakeup as two Republican House members, Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos, extended their support to Ryan Elijah, challenging the current 7th District incumbent, Rep. Cory Mills, in the upcoming GOP primary. This endorsement comes as a blow to Mills, who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump but is currently embroiled in controversies and an ethics investigation.

Rep. Mills has been under scrutiny due to his lagging fundraising efforts and a restraining order issued against him last year after allegations from a former girlfriend, who claimed he threatened to release sexually explicit videos of her. Mills has denied these accusations. Amid these challenges, his party peers Luna and Haridopolos have thrown their weight behind Elijah, a former news anchor from FOX 35 Orlando, citing a need for integrity and proactive leadership in Congress.

On social media, the endorsing representatives expressed their confidence in Elijah. "We need leaders in Congress who serve with integrity, energy, and an unwavering commitment to the people who sent them there. Ryan Elijah is that leader," they stated. Furthermore, Luna has openly suggested that Mills should withdraw from the race, emphasizing the need for fresh leadership.

The primary, scheduled for August 18, also features other Republican contenders including Michael Don Johnson, an Army veteran, and businesswoman Sarah Ulrich. Despite the crowded field, Elijah has focused on a campaign that highlights his qualifications rather than attacking Mills, urging the House Ethics panel to continue its investigation into the allegations against Mills.

Reacting to the endorsements, Elijah expressed his gratitude and highlighted the importance of the upcoming election. "I’m honored to have the endorsements of two Florida Representatives I deeply respect,” Elijah commented. “They understand what’s at stake in our congressional race and know I’m the clear choice to win in November."

As the primary approaches, the endorsements from Luna and Haridopolos could catalyze further support for Elijah, potentially influencing the dynamics of the race. Mills did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the new endorsements.
