Trump Rallies for Senator Darline Graham in South Carolina, Urging Voters to See Her as His Proxy

President Donald Trump hit the campaign trail in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, this Friday, throwing his political weight behind Senator Darline Graham. This move comes after a significant debate gaffe by Graham raised doubts about her suitability to succeed her late brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. At the rally, Trump implored the audience to view Graham's candidacy as an extension of his own political agenda.

“We're going to elect Senator Darline Graham to fight, fight, fight for South Carolina and to always put America first,” Trump proclaimed at the event. “You vote for her, you're going to be very proud of that vote.”

The rally was strategically timed just days before the Senate runoff, where Graham faces off against Rep. Ralph Norman. Trump reminisced about his close relationship with Lindsey Graham, who had been a prominent figure in South Carolina politics for over three decades until his death last month.

“I think Lindsey respected Darline more than any other person he knows, including me,” Trump reflected, underscoring the familial bond he believed would resonate with voters.

Despite recent setbacks where other candidates endorsed by Trump lost their primaries, the former president hasn't shied away from supporting Graham. His backing came swiftly even before she formally announced her candidacy, a testament to his commitment to maintaining his influence over GOP politics.

However, Graham’s recent debate performance, where she stumbled over a question regarding the U.S.-Taiwan relations, has sparked a wave of criticism. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and former Governor Mark Sanford have publicly expressed their concerns, siding with Norman.

Unfazed, Trump defended Graham at the rally, suggesting that her honesty and allegiance to his policies were what truly mattered. “She was just being honest,” Trump stated. “It hasn't been her thing, but she's surrounded by very good people, and she said that she's totally for the military.”

Graham, for her part, turned the criticism around by comparing her lack of political experience to Trump’s status before his presidential victory in 2016. “The critics say I shouldn’t run for the Senate. They say I'm not a politician. You know what I say? Guilty as charged,” she told the cheering crowd.

Adding to the support, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster endorsed Graham ahead of the rally, praising her continuation of Lindsey Graham's work and her firm alignment with Trump's America First agenda.

Trump's visit to South Carolina represents a significant commitment of his political resources, as he has primarily limited his campaign efforts to digital and remote engagements this election cycle. The president also hinted at deploying substantial funds from his primary super PAC, MAGA Inc., to support candidates he backs.

As the midterms loom, Trump warned of high stakes, including potential investigations and impeachment attempts by Democrats if they gain control of Congress. “You're going to lose everything,” he cautioned. “I'm going to have to go through impeachment.”

With the runoff approaching, the support from Trump might just be the boost Graham needs to solidify her position and continue her brother’s legacy in the Senate.
