In a bold move against President Donald Trump's recent executive order to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America," Representative Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) has announced plans to introduce legislation aimed at overturning the controversial decision. Hours after the President's announcement, Dingell revealed her intent to bring forward the "Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act" as early as Monday.

The decision to rename one of the Great Lakes has sparked significant outcry, seen as an escalation in the ongoing trade disputes between the United States and Canada. Earlier in the week, the Trump administration imposed a hefty 50 percent tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, leading to severe retaliatory measures from Ottawa.

Dingell criticized the name change in a recent interview, expressing disbelief and concern over the implications of such an act. "This is insane, this naming Lake Ontario 'Lake America,'" she stated, highlighting the deep ties and geographical proximity between the U.S. and Canada. "People do not understand how intertwined our two countries are," she added.

According to Trump, who voiced his frustrations on Truth Social, Canada has been "Ripping Off" the United States for decades, calling it "easily the most difficult and unreasonable" country to deal with. This statement and the subsequent renaming of Lake Ontario have added fuel to the fire in the trade disagreements, potentially influencing the upcoming midterm elections. Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed has already criticized his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, for supporting the renaming initiative.

She mentioned collecting about 100 signatures from fellow House Democrats on a letter urging the Trump Administration to reconsider its approach towards Canada. "I grew up in St. Clair, and every day when I looked out my window, I didn't see America; I saw Canada. We were that close," Dingell recalled, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong and respectful relationship with the neighboring country.
