In a striking departure from party lines, Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) has launched a campaign ad openly criticizing President Donald Trump's immigration strategies. The ad, which began airing on Thursday in the Miami market, marks a rare public rebuke from a Republican lawmaker toward the White House's current immigration policies.

"Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far," Salazar asserts in a direct address captured in the video, according to ad tracking firm AdImpact. This criticism comes at a critical time as the GOP grapples with maintaining its recent gains among Hispanic voters amidst rising concerns over the economy and the president's stringent immigration measures.

Trump's immigration rhetoric was a cornerstone of his 2024 presidential campaign victory. However, his popularity on the issue has plummeted following a controversial increase in immigration enforcement in Minneapolis last winter, which tragically resulted in the deaths of two American protesters, Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

Despite efforts by the White House to mitigate public dissent, a recent POLITICO poll indicates that only a quarter of Trump’s 2024 voters believe his immigration push might be overly aggressive, mirroring sentiments from earlier polls this year.

In her televised plea, Salazar warned, “Be careful what your advisers are telling you about immigration policy. The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today.” Additionally, Salazar has released a similar ad in Spanish, underscoring her commitment to reaching her predominantly Latino constituency.

While Trump endorsed Salazar in February, the three-term congresswoman has notably refrained from fully backing his immigration policies. This stance has become a focal point in her re-election campaign against Democrat Eliott Rodriguez, who argues that Salazar has not effectively challenged the president's agenda.

Though not traditionally seen as a battleground district, recent internal polling shared by her Democratic challenger suggests that the race could be more competitive than expected. Trump had previously won the district by over 14 points in the 2024 election.
