Crypto Super PAC Pledges $30 Million to Oppose Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio Election

A super PAC heavily financed by the cryptocurrency industry, named Fairshake, has announced a formidable $30 million campaign aimed at preventing Democrat Sherrod Brown from securing a Senate seat in Ohio. This financial commitment marks the PAC's most assertive action in the 2026 midterm elections so far.

The decision by Fairshake, which is supported by leading crypto firms, follows closely after Senate Democrats defeated a bill favorable to the digital asset sector. Fairshake had previously invested over $40 million in 2024 against Brown, who was a vocal skeptic of the cryptocurrency industry during his tenure as Senate Banking Committee chair.

Currently, Brown is engaged in a highly anticipated special election against Senator Jon Husted, aiming to fill the seat vacated by Vice President JD Vance. The Ohio Senate race has been a primary target for the crypto group, which boasts a war chest of more than $120 million. The funds had been withheld while awaiting the fate of the Clarity Act in the Senate, a bill that required Democratic support but ultimately failed.

Brown's historical opposition to crypto-friendly legislation has positioned him as a significant barrier to the industry's legislative goals. His return to the Senate could potentially reinforce these roadblocks, prompting the substantial financial opposition from Fairshake.

Ohio remains a critical battleground for Democrats, who are hopeful to reclaim some GOP-held Senate seats and diminish the Republican majority. Despite losing to GOP Senator Bernie Moreno by about four percentage points in 2024, Brown's team remains optimistic, especially given the waning popularity of President Donald Trump.

Responding to the PAC's financial commitment, Brown's campaign manager, Patrick Eisenhauer, expressed no surprise, citing that opponents recognize Brown's dedication to opposing the "rigged system." Eisenhauer's statement highlighted the perception that Husted is influenced by corporate and billionaire donations.

As the 2026 elections approach, it remains to be seen how Fairshake will allocate the remainder of its substantial funds. The group, primarily funded by Coinbase, Ripple, and venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz, has supported candidates from both parties in the past. However, there is growing concern among Democrats that the PAC's spending might tilt more towards Republicans this cycle, especially after the rejection of the Clarity bill.

This intense financial push in Ohio was first reported by the New York Times, underscoring the significant national interest in this high-stakes Senate race.
