Rep. Ashley Hinson took a firm stance against the ongoing war in Iran on Monday, highlighting the economic strain it is placing on Iowans. As the midterm elections loom, Hinson is distancing herself from President Donald Trump, signaling a shift in her political alignment due to the war's unpopular local impact.

"Iowans are being squeezed and shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran," Hinson stated in a social media post on Monday. She emphasized the urgency of finding solutions to alleviate high prices, suggesting measures such as suspending the gas tax, pausing diesel exports, and initiating a diesel relief program specifically aimed at helping farmers and truckers who are severely affected by the rising costs.

This isn't the first time Hinson has voiced concerns over the war's repercussions. A previous report by POLITICO in June disclosed a recording where Hinson expressed worries about the political consequences if the conflict were to drag on. However, she did not directly mention Trump in her latest remarks.

Gas and diesel prices have surged since the onset of the war with Iran in February, causing widespread financial discomfort. According to AAA, regular gas prices reached $4.45 per gallon, and diesel hit a record $6.50 per gallon on Monday. The Trump administration, however, has downplayed these economic hardships. During a campaign event in North Carolina last week, Trump remarked, "You have a little higher. It’s a very inexpensive price to pay for what we’ve done... Frankly, even if it was a lot more."

Despite the administration's stance, Hinson is actively seeking collaboration to tackle the issue, stating, "These actions to lower costs are needed ASAP, and the war needs to be brought to a successful and immediate end." She pledged to work with any willing partners to address these challenges promptly, indicating a readiness to cross party lines for the sake of economic relief.

As November's elections approach, Hinson's call for an end to the war and her focus on economic relief measures reflect her commitment to her constituents' immediate needs, potentially reshaping her political journey in a deeply divided national landscape.
