The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is under fire for not disclosing the results of its investigations into the fatal shootings of two American citizens by immigration officers in Minneapolis this January. Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who chairs the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, expressed his frustration over the lack of communication from DHS regarding these critical incidents.

During a recent conversation in the Capitol hallways, Senator Paul revealed that his committee has repeatedly requested details on the internal investigations concerning any shootings involving immigration officers but has received no substantial information so far. When pressed about the specific cases of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, who were both killed in the January incidents, Paul confirmed, “We’ve asked for information. We’re still asking.”

DHS has not yet responded to these allegations or provided any comments on the delay.

This lack of transparency comes amidst broader scrutiny of DHS operations, especially concerning the use of deadly force by ICE and Border Patrol agents. Several recent incidents have involved U.S. citizens, raising significant concerns about the protocols and accountability measures within these agencies.

Adding to the controversy, just last Saturday, ICE agents shot Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez, a 28-year-old unauthorized immigrant facing deportation. Despite being severely injured with a bullet still lodged in his back, Garcés Pérez was subsequently transferred to ICE custody. His legal representatives argue that his treatment highlights serious procedural and humanitarian issues within the agency.

The ongoing opacity from DHS prompted Senator Paul to withhold a confirmation hearing for the administration’s nominee for ICE director earlier this year, seeking accountability and detailed reports on these shootings. The White House was forced to withdraw the nomination last week after it stalled due to these unresolved issues.

The standoff continues as bipartisan concern grows over the actions and accountability of immigration enforcement officers. Senator Paul and his committee remain adamant about receiving the withheld information, emphasizing the need for transparency and oversight to protect citizens' rights and ensure justice.
