In a daring stride into Republican heartlands, the centrist New Democrat Coalition, through its NewDem Action Fund, is endorsing a slate of candidates for seats deeply rooted in GOP territory. This move underscores a growing confidence within the party as the midterm elections draw near.

The coalition is throwing its support behind seven candidates challenging incumbent Republicans and vying for open seats in districts that have shown strong Republican leanings, some of which President Donald Trump carried by substantial margins in the 2024 Presidential Election. Among the endorsed are Chris Backemeyer in Nebraska, Kristina Knickerbocker in Ohio, Mitchell Berman in Wisconsin, and Raymond Smith in North Carolina, all challenging current GOP representatives. Additionally, endorsements extend to Nancy Lacore in South Carolina, Teresa Benitez-Thompson in Nevada, and Blake Gendebien in New York, who are contesting in open races.

Chris Backemeyer, one of the endorsed candidates, emphasized the pragmatic approach that defines the New Democrat Coalition. "I spent 21 years serving our country in national security roles, focusing on the mission and getting the job done," he stated. "That's what Nebraska's First District deserves."

Rep. Greg Stanton of Arizona, chair of the NewDem Action Fund, highlighted the comprehensive support these candidates will receive, from funding to strategic advice, and even campaign trail appearances from New Democrat members. Stanton himself plans to support campaigns in Arizona and Iowa.

The endorsements are timed as President Trump intensifies his campaign efforts in traditionally Republican areas, signaling possible vulnerabilities. Stanton expressed skepticism about Trump's secure standing. "I'm not sure where friendly Trump territory is in the United States of America," he remarked. "Americans are very upset at the poor decisions of this president, but they're even more mad at the Republicans in Congress who have rolled over and let him do whatever he wants without any resistance."

Should these New Democrat-endorsed candidates succeed in flipping their districts, it would significantly boost the influence of the already substantial caucus, especially in supporting Hakeem Jeffries for the House Speaker role. "Every single endorsed candidate supports Hakeem Jeffries for speaker of the House," Stanton confirmed. "We will be a strong governing partner to make sure his speakership is as successful as possible."

This bold strategy by the New Democrat Coalition not only aims to reshape the political landscape in these crucial districts but also to strengthen their legislative influence in the upcoming term, setting the stage for potential significant shifts in U.S. congressional dynamics.
