Trump Sparks Controversy by Sharing Senator Tom Cotton's Phone Number Amidst Daylight Saving Time Debate

In a bold move characteristic of his presidency, Donald Trump took to social media on Saturday to share what appears to be Senator Tom Cotton’s personal phone number. The former president urged constituents to contact the Arkansas Republican to support the "Sunshine Protection Act," a bill aiming to make Daylight Saving Time permanent.

“Almost everybody wants 'The Sunshine Protection Act' to pass, except for Tom Cotton,” Trump stated on Truth Social, pushing for what he believes would be a "GREAT Bipartisan WIN for the United States Senate, and for America, itself." Trump’s post not only included the alleged phone number but also a call to action for the people of Arkansas to persuade their senator.

This isn’t the first time Trump has used such tactics. During the 2016 Republican presidential primary, he infamously shared Senator Lindsey Graham’s phone number after facing criticism from him. Trump later reflected on this incident at Graham’s funeral, conceding that sharing the number was a mistake.

The advocacy from Trump for the Sunshine Protection Act has been persistent, with the president arguing that ending the biannual clock change would benefit various groups, including farmers and sports organizations. He underscored his point by attaching a letter from PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp, who supported the bill citing the need for more daylight for tournaments.

Senator Cotton, however, has expressed concerns that permanent daylight saving could disadvantage early risers such as children and farmers by leaving them in darkness during morning hours. Despite Trump’s vigorous campaign, the bill has faced opposition from other senators as well and remains stalled in the Senate since last July.

The effort to make daylight saving time permanent has been a recurring topic in U.S. politics. Introduced in the House in January 2025 by Rep. Vern Buchanan and led in the Senate by Sen. Rick Scott, the legislation aims to standardize time year-round across most of the country.

Responses to Trump's latest social media post have been mixed, with some criticizing the sharing of a personal phone number as an invasion of privacy, while others applaud his dedication to the cause. As of now, spokespeople for Senator Cotton and the White House have yet to respond to requests for comments on the matter.
