Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has made a significant leap in his campaign fundraising efforts, amassing an impressive $18 million in the third quarter of 2026. This total, which spans across his campaign and joint fundraising committees, marks a doubling from his second-quarter total of $9 million. The robust sum has energized the Republican base as the election enters its critical final phase.
Paxton's fundraising prowess was highlighted during the first full reporting period following his victory in the primary runoff in May. The period coincided with the Republican midterm convention in Texas, which featured several high-profile pro-Paxton fundraising events. This surge in financial support underscores the deep pockets and serious commitment of Republican donors rallying behind Paxton as the Texas nominee.
In contrast, Democrat James Talarico's campaign has not yet disclosed their third-quarter figures. However, Talarico had previously raised a formidable $30 million in the second quarter, setting the stage for a fiercely competitive fundraising race. Nick Maddux, a senior adviser to the Paxton campaign, commented on the influx of resources, asserting, “We now have the resources to make sure every Texan sees Talarico’s radical record between now and Election Day.”
To bolster his campaign further, Paxton announced a massive $20 million ad buy last week, representing one of the largest single media investments in a Texas Senate race. This move is part of a broader strategy by Senate Republicans, who have been pouring tens of millions into the state to support Paxton's candidacy. The Senate Leadership Fund alone has spent or reserved more than $100 million in Texas, with additional support from the Trump-aligned MAGA Inc. and its affiliates planning to spend near $45 million in the state through mid-October.
Despite the substantial financial backing, the race remains tight. Most recent public polling shows Talarico maintaining a slim lead, though an internal poll released by the Paxton campaign suggests a slight edge for Paxton, leading Talarico by three points.
Paxton himself has voiced concerns over the external influences shaping the campaign, revealing at a private donor event that he has "never been in a race where I felt less control over the campaign," pointing to significant influence "from D.C." This candid admission highlights the national stakes and external pressures intertwined with this high-profile Senate race.
As the election nears, the financial arms race continues to escalate, setting the stage for what is likely to be one of the most closely watched and hotly contested races in the nation.
