In a pivotal year for Texas politics, Senator Ted Cruz has stepped into the spotlight not only as a supporter but as a strategic ally for Attorney General Ken Paxton in the fiercely competitive Senate race. As the U.S. Hispanic Business Council struggled to secure Paxton for a Senate town hall, they found an invaluable ally in Cruz, whose influence helped bring Paxton to the table last week.
Javier Palomarez, the council’s CEO, remarked on the necessity of finding mutual connections to secure Paxton's participation. "We needed to find common ground and people that he trusted, that I trusted… and that clearly was Ted Cruz," Palomarez explained, despite his own differing political views from Cruz.
Cruz's involvement is not just a matter of making appearances. He is actively shaping the campaign, balancing his roles as an adviser and major fundraiser, while firmly believing in Paxton's victory—a result crucial for maintaining a Republican majority in the Senate and preventing a shift towards a Democratic representation for Texas.
Paxton's campaign, which recently boasted an $18 million fundraising achievement partly thanks to Cruz’s introductions to new donors, has benefited significantly from Cruz's extensive network. Behind the scenes, Cruz’s connections from his 2016 presidential run are being leveraged to support Paxton's campaign against Democratic contender James Talarico.
Despite the high stakes, Cruz's commitment is clear. "It is absolutely critical that Texas stay red," Cruz said, emphasizing his full support for Paxton's election over Talarico. His involvement also extends to regular campaign trail appearances and managing donor relations, highlighting his dual role in rallying traditional GOP supporters and new donors alike.
However, the alliance carries risks. With Paxton trailing in recent polls and Democrats optimistic about flipping the seat, Cruz’s political future could be impacted. A loss for Paxton might hinder Cruz's momentum as he eyes a potential 2028 presidential bid.
Yet, Cruz's proactive strategy could also reinforce his standing within the GOP. According to a Texas Republican strategist, "This is smart on Ted’s part. It cements him with Paxton supporters as being the guy who stood up for him, and it allows him to expand his reach and have a greater claim on having a unified Texas behind him if he makes a run in 2028."
As the campaign intensifies, Cruz’s super PAC, Truth and Courage, has already placed over $2 million in ads opposing Talarico, and Cruz continues to host influential fundraising events. This multifaceted support not only underscores Cruz's role as a key player in Texas politics but also sets the stage for his future ambitions on the national political landscape.
