As the 2026 Congressional elections approach, the political terrain is increasingly favoring the GOP. However, Democrats remain optimistic, envisioning a scenario where they reclaim the majority. In an exclusive with Score, key party strategists from both the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) have pinpointed eight sleeper races that could very well define the night.
Will Van Nuys of the DCCC and Will Kiley of the NRCC each shared four races where their respective underdog candidates could cause significant upsets. "We're not saying it won't be a tough fight, but we feel very good about where we stand," Kiley commented on the GOP's prospects.
Van Nuys, on the other hand, emphasized the Democrats' strategy of expanding the battlefield. "Our job is to raise as much as we can to expand this battlefield as far as we can," he stated.
Democrats Bet on Changing Demographics and Strategic Campaigns
In Colorado's 5th district, Democrats see potential as the area's demographics shift. The young and growing Hispanic population could tilt the scales in favor of the Democrats, despite the district's previous strong Republican leaning. Similarly, in Iowa's 2nd district, the open seat left by a Republican Senate run and local economic frustrations provide a unique opportunity for a Democratic upset.
Kentucky's 6th district could also see a change, fueled by the personal involvement of Democratic Governor Andy Beshear and a favorable internal poll for Democrat Zach Dembo. Lastly, Wisconsin's 1st district presents a stark contrast in candidates, possibly swaying blue-collar voters toward Democrat Mitchell Berman, an emergency room nurse facing off against a former manufacturing executive.
Republicans Focus on Fresh Faces and Strategic Spending
The GOP is not sitting idle, with strategic bets placed in key districts. New Mexico's 2nd district features a former Marine and police officer, Greg Cunningham, who leverages his Hispanic heritage in a predominantly Latino area. His "badass" persona is seen as a key advantage by the GOP.
In New York's 3rd district, substantial financial backing and a boost from a gubernatorial campaign might help Mike LiPetri finally overcome his Democratic opponent. Arizona's 1st district sees an opportunity with Jay Feely, a former NFL player turned politician, capitalizing on a divided Democratic primary.
Lastly, in Nevada's 3rd district, Marty O'Donnell, a composer famed for his work on the Halo video game series, is using his personal wealth and significant GOP financial support to challenge the incumbent Democrat.
As these races heat up, both parties are pouring resources into these battlegrounds, hoping that their sleeper picks will carry them to victory in what promises to be a fiercely contested election cycle.
