In a dramatic turn of events in Texas politics, President Donald Trump has taken to social media to express his dissatisfaction with key Republican figures as his endorsed candidate, Ken Paxton, faces a tough battle for a Senate seat. The race, which pits Paxton against Democrat James Talarico, is proving to be unexpectedly competitive in a state that has traditionally been a stronghold for the GOP.
Trump's frustrations were aired in a fiery post on Truth Social where he specifically targeted Karl Rove, a seasoned Republican strategist, and Senator John Cornyn. Trump accused both of being detrimental to Paxton's campaign. “They are hurting Texas and, more importantly, hurting the United States of America!” Trump asserted, blaming them for potentially paving the way for a Paxton loss due to their "weak and ineffective" political maneuvers.
Cornyn, who recently lost his bid for reelection in a contentious Republican primary, had depicted Paxton as a compromised candidate, which has added layers of intra-party conflict as the election nears. According to recent public polling, Talarico has managed to secure a narrow lead over Paxton, intensifying the stakes as Election Day approaches.
Amidst this backdrop, Trump has called for unity and support for Paxton from those who previously backed Cornyn. “Your favorite President (ME!) is asking all of those who supported Senator John Cornyn to UNITE, and immediately switch your support to Ken Paxton,” he urged. Trump praised Paxton’s capabilities, assuredly calling him a “Great Senator” just as he has been a “Great Attorney General.”
The financial aspects of the campaign have also drawn significant attention. Talarico has set new fundraising records, amassing a staggering $64 million in the third quarter alone, bringing his total to over $134 million. Conversely, Paxton raised $18 million in the same period and announced a substantial $20 million ad buy, with MAGA Inc. and its affiliates planning to inject nearly $45 million into the campaign through mid-October.
The massive spending has sparked concerns among some Republicans who worry that the hefty investment in Texas could divert crucial funds from other competitive races across the country. The leak of an audio recording where Paxton blamed Trump for some of his campaign challenges has only fueled further frustrations within the party.
This intensifying battle comes as Trump's own approval ratings face a downturn, despite his strong performance in Texas during the 2024 election. The growing anxiety among Republicans about their prospects in upcoming elections underscores the high stakes and internal divisions that could influence the outcome in November.
