Republican Rep. Mike Lawler Challenges Both Parties on Immigration in High-Stakes Election

NEW YORK — In a bold move that sets him apart in the political landscape, Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican deemed vulnerable in the upcoming elections, is taking a firm stance on immigration, challenging policies from both Democrats and his own party. As he campaigns for a third term in the suburban Hudson Valley district—a region won by Kamala Harris in 2024—Lawler's unique position could influence the balance of power in the House.

Lawler has publicly criticized the Democrats for their sanctuary policies while also condemning the Trump administration's severe immigration enforcement measures. At a recent forum, he stressed the necessity of reforming ICE and deporting criminals, citing cases of individuals killed by illegal immigrants as well as victims of aggressive enforcement tactics.

His district, which has seen a significant influx of Haitians, has been a focal point of his campaign. Lawler has advocated for extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians, opposing the Trump administration's decision to end these protections. Despite his efforts, including cosponsoring legislation, the proposal is currently stalled in the Senate, with Lawler blaming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for the lack of progress.

The issue of immigration, while a cornerstone of Lawler's campaign, competes with other pressing voter concerns such as the economy and threats to democracy. A recent Emerson College poll indicates that immigration is not the top priority for the district's electorate. Nonetheless, Lawler has leveraged his criticism of Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul's recent law, which limits cooperation between local police and ICE, to highlight his stance on public safety.

Opponents and critics argue that Lawler's position might not resonate with the broader voter base. Cait Conley, his Democratic challenger and an Army veteran, has focused her campaign on economic issues like affordability, suggesting Lawler uses immigration as a diversion from other critical local concerns.

Lawler's nuanced approach to immigration reform includes supporting the Dignity Act, a bipartisan bill aiming to provide work permits to millions of undocumented immigrants. However, the legislation has yet to be voted on in the House, and some advocates argue it doesn't adequately address pathways to citizenship.

As the election nears, Lawler remains steadfast, asserting that his immigration policy stance reflects a balance of securing the border and enforcing the law, while also showing compassion through initiatives like TPS. Whether this strategy will appeal to his constituents remains to be seen, but it undeniably sets the stage for a heated debate on the future of immigration policy in his district and beyond.
