CHICAGO — Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is leveraging his considerable wealth to influence key battleground races, pouring at least $38 million into campaigns that primarily support Black and Hispanic candidates. This massive financial influx could be a strategic move to garner support for a potential 2028 presidential run.
Pritzker, a billionaire and a potential presidential candidate, is focusing on candidates in states with significant Black or Hispanic populations, including South Carolina, Nevada, New Mexico, Virginia, and Michigan. These states hold early positions in the Democratic presidential nominating calendar, a recent strategic adjustment by the party.
Despite his presidential ambitions, Pritzker insists his current focus is on the 2026 midterms. However, beneficiaries of his largesse suggest his support could bolster his 2028 candidacy. Rep. Shomari Figures, a Black Democrat in Alabama, praised Pritzker for his willingness to support minority candidates in challenging districts. Pritzker’s new super PAC, Ready for the Fight, targets GOP-leaning areas that appear winnable in favorable political climates.
Pritzker’s significant financial contributions include $1.6 million to support Figures, $1.9 million for Tennessee state Rep. Justin Pearson, and $1.3 million for Arkansas Democrat Chris Jones. These contributions have made him the largest Democratic spender in these districts, aside from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Additionally, Pritzker has contributed substantially to the gubernatorial campaign of Texas Democrat Gina Hinojosa, including a personal donation of $200,000 and an additional $1 million matched by the Democratic Governors Association.
While Pritzker’s efforts are notable for their financial magnitude, they also highlight a strategic approach to building alliances within key demographic groups, potentially positioning him as a formidable contender in the 2028 primaries. South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn noted the importance of genuine commitment over financial contributions in earning voter trust and support.
Pritzker’s investment strategy extends to supporting rising stars within the party, such as Illinois Lieutenant Governor Julianna Stratton, whom he helped elevate to the U.S. Senate. This move, while creating some internal tensions, underscores his influence and ability to impact significant electoral outcomes.
As Pritzker continues to navigate his dual roles as governor and major Democratic donor, his strategic investments are drawing attention and speculation about his long-term political aspirations, setting the stage for what could be a highly competitive presidential campaign season.
