NYC High School in Hot Water Over Controversial ‘Intifada’ Post by Socialist Youth Group

One of New York City's top public schools, Stuyvesant High School, is currently embroiled in controversy due to a provocative social media post endorsed by its Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) chapter. The post, which appeared on Instagram on October 8, boldly proclaims "Intifada Until Victory!" and criticizes the Democratic Socialists of America’s NYC chapter for allegedly suppressing student activists’ efforts to protest against Mayor Zohran Mamdani's policies on Israel.

The contentious post was jointly supported by YDSA chapters from several institutions, including Hunter College, the New School, City College, and Lehman College. These groups have publicly condemned Mayor Mamdani for retaining NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, whom they label a “Zionist billionaire,” and have accused him of betraying the Palestinian cause.

The term ‘intifada’ has historically referred to violent uprisings in Israel and is perceived by many in the Jewish community as a call to violence. This has led to significant backlash from various stakeholders, including Moshe Spern, president of United Jewish Teachers. Spern has called for the immediate removal of the post and issued a demand for a public apology from the YDSA, emphasizing the risk of contributing to a hostile environment amidst hundreds of antisemitic and anti-Israel incidents reported in NYC schools since October 7, 2023.

Spern’s concerns have been formally voiced in communications to Stuyvesant’s Principal Seung Yu and NYC Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels, invoking Title VI — which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, ancestry, and national origin. He is seeking a review of the YDSA chapter’s charter and activities for compliance with federal law and school regulations.

Despite the uproar, the NYC-DSA has defended the right to organize, distancing itself from the rally but criticizing the use of "red scare tactics" against student movements. As of now, Principal Yu and the Department of Education have not responded to the allegations.

This incident is part of broader tensions in the city following the recent Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war. Mayor Mamdani, who has been a vocal critic of Israel, has faced his own controversies. He has been reluctant to condemn the phrase "globalize the intifada" used during his campaign and has been labeled as an antisemite by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a claim he denies.

The unfolding situation at Stuyvesant High School highlights the complex interplay of student activism, political beliefs, and community sensitivities, reflecting broader societal and global tensions that continue to challenge the city's leadership and educational institutions.
