Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso is set to campaign alongside Ken Paxton in Texas next week, as the GOP intensifies efforts to secure what has become a precarious seat. Barrasso will participate in a bus tour with Paxton, who faces a tight race against Democrat James Talarico. This surprising contest comes despite President Donald Trump’s significant victory margin in Texas just two years prior.
Barrasso, a prominent figure in the Republican Senate hierarchy, is the highest-ranking member to actively campaign in Texas this election cycle. While Senate Majority Leader John Thune has supported Paxton through fundraising efforts, he has not taken a public campaigning role.
The Wyoming senator's schedule is packed, as he will also be campaigning with former Rep. Mike Rogers in Michigan and Rep. Andy Barr in Kentucky. His recent itinerary included stops in South Carolina with Trump, as well as visits to key battleground states like Iowa, Ohio, and Kansas.
In an environment where Republicans are battling strong Democratic momentum and widespread voter dissatisfaction, Barrasso remains optimistic about retaining control of the Senate. He noted the high stakes and energy surrounding the upcoming elections, emphasizing that numerous races are still too close to call.
“The energy at every event has been palpable. With so many races hanging in the balance, we are not leaving anything to chance,” Barrasso stated.
Despite this optimism, challenges remain. The GOP has invested heavily in Texas to support Paxton, although there has been internal criticism about his campaign strategies. Senator Kevin Cramer expressed concerns, hoping for a Paxton victory but acknowledging the candidate's need for improvement and greater self-reliance in fundraising.
As the battle intensifies, Democrats are making bold moves into traditionally strong Republican territories like South Carolina and Mississippi, spurred by late campaign spending surges. However, Barrasso expressed confidence in maintaining these strongholds, citing substantial investments from President Trump’s campaign.
“President Trump has not only opened his financial coffers but has also devoted considerable time to these campaigns. We believe our resources are sufficient to effectively communicate our message to the voters,” Barrasso concluded.
With the election drawing near, the GOP's efforts in Texas and beyond will be a litmus test for voter sentiment and the effectiveness of their strategies in what has proven to be an unpredictable electoral season.
